Sustainable Guide
Is Biodegradable PLA the Same as Compostable PLA?
Biodegradable and compostable are not interchangeable claims without defined conditions, timeframes and standards.
Key Points
- Check the applicable test standard.
- Distinguish industrial from home composting.
- Avoid claims about ordinary soil or landfill without evidence.
- Match wording to the certified product scope.
Practical Decision Process
Begin with the part requirement and the target printer. Record the filament condition, spool history, nozzle, build surface, temperature profile and expected production duration. Change one variable at a time so the result can be compared rather than guessed.
Material and environmental claims should match the exact formulation, recycled-content source, documentation and certification scope. PLA should not be described as rapidly degrading in a home, soil or ordinary landfill environment without specific evidence.
Wholesale and Production Review
For a trial or wholesale program, define the material, quantity, destination, printer type and application before selecting colors. Confirm packaging, storage, technical documents and repeat-order requirements before scaling from sample evaluation to regular supply.
